LANGA RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OF OVERFLOWING SEWAGE IN SA
The overflowing in sewage at langa area in Cape Town, South Africa is making residents to complain.
According to the City, plans to upgrade the hostels in the area are in the pipeline. They have blamed regular blockages on residents placing foreign objects into the system.
Residence lament that Mayco Member for Human Settlements, Malusi Booi, had visited the Zones and knew about their situation “but all Booi does is give us promises, but he never fulfils them.
Meanwhile, Mayco Member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg said in most cases, abuse of the sewer system was the cause of blockages or overflows.
Quoting Limberg, “Teams attending to blockages commonly discover builders’ rubble, nappies, sanitary pads, condoms, and tyres, along with general litter from the system when clearing blockages. These blockages are exacerbated by the disposal of cooking fats into the system, which hardens as it cools and acts like glue for the other materials in the line.”
She said current blockages will be investigated and addressed. As well as urged residents to report and to play their part in raising awareness of sewer abuse.
